Are you up for a visit to Timber Ridge high in the Magdalena mountains on May 3rd? But let's meet at 8 a.m. at the Socorro schools admin. offices on Franklin St. and get an early start on the hike in case of afternoon storms.
We've been on Timber Ridge before and the views are fantastic. If it's clear enough one can even see over the San Andres mts. to part of White Sands! The trail starts at about 9,900 ft. and Timber Peak is at 10,510 feet according to my topo map. With all the snow on South Baldy this past winter there should be some good wildflowers up there too.
Please observe the usual precautions. Sun protection, snack and water, maybe a walking stick. Also it could be chilly up there, . . ., or not.

Here is Bob Merkel's report on the hike:
The trailhead for this hike on trail 70 is about a mile before the gate
across the road at South Baldy and at an elevation of just over 9800 feet.
Our group followed the trail sometimes along the ridgeline and sometimes
below on the SW side of Timber Ridge. When we got near Timber Peak we
stayed on the ridgeline and had to clamber up through broken rock to the top at 10510 feet. Even with some haze, the views were magnificent, down to
Socorro way below to the NE, over to the San Andres Mts. to the SE and San
Mateos to the SW. Magdalena Ridge fills the western skyline but M mountain, Sierra Ladrones, and the Manzanos were all in sight to the N and
NE. Most of the group followed a trail farther east off the top and down
across some talus to pick up the main trail coming back. Debby and I worked
our way back staying close tothe ridgeline but found some parts pretty
difficult to navigate.
Hardly any flowers were blooming except a few tiny mustards. On the other
hand there were Violet-green Swallows swooping around us especially near the
small saddles along the ridge on the way back.
Some pictures can be found in the photo archive.
